After years
in the agricultural lending business, it became very apparent there
was a definite need to provide the type of services we offer. Our primary
focus is in the area of audit and review of agricultural lending. Agricultural
lending is a specialized business that requires auditors and credit
reviewers to have specific knowledge of the concepts applicable to this
line of business.
Over the years,
we have witnessed a growing practice of accounting firms hiring college
accounting graduates to be the front-line auditors in the audit of institutions
that have significant agricultural loan exposures. We have also observed
these auditors missing key findings on potential problem loans and not
being able to identify poor lending practices. This is disaster waiting
to happen.
We have also
observed lending institutions lacking good lending procedures; internal
credit review practices; and proper internal controls. We have observed
Federal Regulators taking a less aggressive stance during the last several
years during the relatively good times experience in agricultural and
agricultural lending. This is going to change and result in problems
for many institutions.
We have observed
lending institutions making loans outside of their areas of expertise
and without the use of good industry information. The good institutions
will periodically complete commodity specific reviews to ensure they
are aware of trends and future problems, so they can make adjustments
to their lending programs. However, there are many institutions that
don't and this is a weakness that will surface in the future.
We will work
with accounting firms, audit firms, commercial banks and Farm Credit
Institutions to provide specialized training; develop or improve upon
lending procedures, internal credit review programs and internal controls;
assist in or complete internal credit reviews; and we will complete
commodity and industry specific reports/studies to assist lenders in
adjusting their lending programs to adapt to current and projected conditions.
We have years
of experience in agricultural lending (mortgage & commercial); internal
credit review; loan servicing and collection; lending operations and
controls; work experience with Federal regulators; and economic analysis
and forecasting.
